Lipstik - Where Lipstik Meets Leonard Cohen
For those of you who like Tom Petty and Wilco, be sure to check out Lipstik. After bringing out their first recording ‘Everything Is Good’, they have just released their follow-up There Is Only One Thing.
One of the most impressive parts of Lipstik would have to be the voice of lead singer Sam Jacobs. Sam has the type of rich vocal qualities that great singers are just born with. The latest album is full of americana/folk rock tunes, however, their cover version of Tom Petty’s ’Yer So Bad’ might be one of the best covers I’ve heard since Shawn Colvin’s Cover Girl album - Sam’s laid back vocal quality and phrasing reminds me of the great Steve Earle.
Another thing that stands out in Sam’s writing is the contradiction in his writing. His songs are filled with painful words and stories over what feels like very uplifting music. Be sure to sign up for Lipstik’s mobile club as they are very good about rewarding their fan club members with FREE downloads of their music.
Lipstik - ‘Broken Bow’
So check out Lipstik and don’t let the name fool you - they are far from the 80’s glam hair band that you might think they are.
