Simplistic Urge - Hard Rock That Pops

What I like most about Simplistic Urge is that they are a Hardcore Rock Band and they manage to write and record great Pop songs without feeling like you’re listening to Pop.  A band that comes to mind in modern day is Nickelback, but these guys rock way harder than Nickelback while maintaining the same quality of pop-driven melodies.  If I had to equate them to a more old school great rock band that also had amazing songs I would say they remind me of Van Halen.

Another thing that stands out to me is their sheer musical proficiency.  When I listen to their song ‘Shadowed Legacy’ I am struck immediately by the speed and perfection in the guitar riff that opens the song.  Not only is it executed well and technically very strong, it’s just a kick ass classic guitar lick.  As if that wasn’t enough, wait for the drums to kick in.  The rapid-fire assault by drummer Chris DiDomenico is mind blowing.  Not to miss a beat, bass player John Haracz keeps the driving rhythm in perfect time with the intense groove set by DiDomenico.

When I looked deeper to find out more about Simplistic Urge, it became clear that I was not the only one who recognizes the talent of this band.  SU formed in 2003, which explains why the guys are so tight musically.  SU was chosen by Q101, Chicago’s largest alternative radio station, to compete in their local Music Mail Room.  Here listeners voted online for the best local band.  SU Won 40% winning air-time on the radio station for their single ‘One Sided’.  SU was nominated as one of the finalists during Suburban Nightlife’s Best of the Burbs Competition.  The band was also featured in a spread in the December 2006 edition of Clubline Magazine

Simplistic Urge has shared stages over the years with nationally renowned artists such as Letter KillsChevelleStutterflyAdair and Collective Soul.  I imagine that SU will be a band to continue to watch over the upcoming years as I’m sure they will begin to take the national music scene by storm.

One last piece worth mentioning is lead vocalist Tim Flynn.  Tim can switch between a hardcore rock vocal to something a bit cleaner and more Pop in a way that makes this band incredibly marketable.  I hope to see big things for Simplistic Urge in the near future!

    I would have to agree.
They have what it takes to get to the top and stay there!

SU is a great band. Stage presents is great, but lately it seems they are
looking like fools on stage trying to hard. I’ve seen lots of people make fun of abecause of how they act on stage now. I lost it with these guys.
If they are soo good why aren’t they signed? I don’t know.
They need to go back to their roots and forget the poppy crap.

  3. Disagree says:

I would have to disagree. I’ve seen this band a few times now, and the reason I keep going back is due to their live show. I have been to shows where bands that just stand around and it’s boring. I think this band will be signed within the next year. They seem to have the heart and drive. Not to mention they have been popping up everywhere: Magazines, SXSW, MTV2, and more! It’s only a matter of time till the right people take notice.

This band is not only talented but they are a great group of guys! The passion and drive that they possess is beyond anyone I’ve ever known. Every time they play they put themselves out there and make the best music they can possibly make. When you play with that much heart and that much intensity, greatness is the only outcome. They are full of energy, passion, soul and tremendous talent. They WILL make it! Keep up the support, they DO appreciate it!

  5. old friend says:

I’ve known Tim since his college days at Monmouth, and I have to say, he and his band are just as original and passionate today as they were when they started. These guys have an ear for quality… I don’t think they’ll ever forget where they came from.

Well put, “old friend”, well put!

I’ve been involved in the music industry for 20+ yrs, and I must say, I am impressed with their business ethics, and extreme drive for ‘putting their BEST out there’…I believe it’ll pay off for them because they’ve got their heads on straight..mix that with the talent they have, and you’ve got something very BIG in the making!

  8. sign by 2009 says:

I say these guys are signed by 2009 or sometime in the beginning of the year. The heart and drive of this band is extreme. I say it’s even better than some of the “signed” acts out there. They bring their show every time and every night be there 1 person in the crowd to a sold out crowd of screaming fans!

Good things are to come for these guys.

  9. All I Have To Say says:

All I have to say is I saw SU for the first time at Metro and I had never heard of them before that night. I was sceptical because I didn’t believe that the one guitarist was even plugged in. I couldn’t understand how he could be that crazy and acrobatic on stage and still be able to play that tight. Not to mention I was there to see LBC and SU is harder music than I’m usually into. But ever since then, I’ve been a big fan. They’re intense to watch, intense to listen to and definitely one of the few AMAZING Chicago bands right now. I’d be VERY suprised if they didn’t blow up in the next year or two.
