Broadtexter = Awareness

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 9:18 pm

We started Broadtexter because of the importance of real-time information, the over-abundance of meaningless information, and an understanding about how text messaging and the mobile phone could converge to solve every problem in your life (except for world turmoil, food/water shortages, your student loans, and how to stay ahead of the “cool kids”).  We applied this to bands and artists and music and musicians you love…but we decided that we could try harder…because the world is heating up into a giant frenzy of super-important issues and one ginormous, super-sized election.

You want to stay in-the-know, ahead-of-the-curve, at the top of the game, riding the crest, flying higher than two guys at a Bob Marley tribute show, etc…so we’re offering some social, political, and cool mobile alert groups of our own.

Joining any of these clubs is completely free!  By joining you will get up to 5 text messages per week (but probably more like 2 or 3 on average — sometimes none).  This should help you feel the kind of confidence that topples regimes and wins lotteries.  You can unsubscribe anytime!  Free…hard to negotiate with that!  Just click on any club link above and use the widget on the right to join up.

Now…go save the planet…go.

New Interactive Broadtexter Features

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 10:00 am

Remember a while back we were saying, “we have really cool new features coming!” Well they’ve come! It took about a ‘minute’ longer than we’d hoped, but we made sure we did it right.

Mailboxes
Fan clubs are now interactive and fans can reply to alerts! Replies land in the new account Inbox or can be received on the artists phone (and replied to from the phone…sweet!).

New Band Page

With the interactivity of mailboxes artists are bound to have all sorts of messages in their Inbox, Outbox, and Past/Pending Alerts lists. They can choose which ones will appear on their redesigned Band Pages.

Text Message Board
Fans can now visit Band Pages on their phones mobile web browser to read messages from the artist and from other fans.

Getting Personal
Now users can chat with a single fan from their phone. The newly designed Subscribers list enables simple one-to-one messaging.

Oh…ONE more thing…BROADTEXTER HAS A MYSPACE PAGE!
We’re not trying to brag or come off like “big shots”…but we have a MySpace page. Click HERE and we can be friends.

Give Some Love to Digital Love Theme

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 10:00 am

We want to give some love to the good folks over at Digital Love Theme. They are an indie video website featuring home grown content.

The 411: At the heart of Digital Love Theme is a collaboration among professional artists and talented people of all shapes, sizes, and types. The videos are short, raw & stylized. Some videos carry a ‘message’…some are just art. It’s also a great source for videos of events & parties around the city of Los Angeles. It’s good fun so check it out.

They created a video for the LA Indie Music Guide featuring some of East LA’s most talented bands captured and recorded from a mobile phones & video cameras. How cool is that?…video shot with mobile phones! At Broadtexter, we’ve said from the beginning, “mobile phones are really popular…someday they’ll catch on…wait…everybody has one already?…see…SEEEE!”

Seth Olansky is part of the crew and an indie musician himself. The video for the LA Indie Music Guide is about bands from the Silverlake/Los Feliz/Echo Park area talking about their histories in the LA music scene and their experiences in the music industry. It is shaping up to be a very cool project with an interesting educational slant geared towards young people who want to gain insights into the industry from artists and bands who have been “in the trenches,” so to speak.

DLT Motto: Do what you love.

RBC Records chooses Broadtexter

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 8:00 pm

The Broadtexter Team is extremely happy to be working with Brett Morrow, Director of Online Marketing and Publicity at RBC Records, to provide mobile fan clubs for their artists. The RBC philosophy and pro-artist approach towards deal-making resonates deeply with our goal to help artists build their careers.

Led by music industry executives Bob Grossi and Brian Shafton, the Burbank, California-based company works with distribution entities such as Navarre, Fontana, Universal, EMI, Atlantic, RED, Asylum, Caroline, ADA and Select-O-Hits to help make E-40, Raphael Saadiq, Public Enemy, 8Ball & MJG, Tech N9ne, Layzie Bone, DJ Quik, C-Bo and others reach their full retail, sales and visibility potential.

RBC allows its artists to retain 100 percent interest in their masters and their company, while simply receiving a sales commission and a fee based on the sales performance of each project they work on. To date, RBC’s biggest successes include Tech N9ne’s Absolute Power and Anghellic albums, which have shipped more than 250,000 units each. RBC titles from Raphael Saadiq, The Game, Do Or Die and DJ Quik have also shipped more than 100,000 units each. In fact, RBC delivered Fontana its first No. 1 independent record in 2005 with DJ Quik’s Trauma. In 2006, RBC helped Tech N9ne’s Everready (The Religion) debut at the No. 2 spot on the independent albums chart.

By fulfilling a general management role for artists and independent records companies, RBC Records has been able to see double-digit growth in each of its first six years in business, even as the overall music industry continues to decline. “We saw a niche in the business environment with the downsizing of the record labels,” Grossi explains. “We figured that a lot of artists that are viable are going to get cut loose and there are going to be very few avenues where they can go and find ways to continue to do their craft.” (check out their coverage in The Source - left)

RBC’s seven-person staff also includes VP of Product Development Ben Grossi, Director of Online Marketing and Publicity Brett Morrow and VP of Sales & Marketing Fred McKendree. The staff helps Grossi and Shafton come up with realistic sales expectations for each project, thus earning RBC the trust of distributors and artists alike. “The distribution companies allow us to get the financing and the rappers trust us that we won’t misappropriate it,” Shafton explains. “So, that’s enabled us to find our niche.”

That niche has been a natural fit for Grossi and Shafton. A 30-year music industry veteran, Grossi was head of sales and distribution for Priority Records for 14 years. During his 17-year career, Shafton rose to VP of Sales and Distribution at Priority. In these capacities, Grossi and Shafton helped build the careers of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Mos Def, Master P, N.W.A, Mack 10, the Geto Boys and a host of others, as well as such prominent labels as Death Row, No Limit, Rawkus, Ruthless and Rap-A-Lot.

They also learned every aspect of the music business. “We’re able to penetrate retail on an urban level above and beyond what anyone else can do,” Shafton says. “We have relationships with everybody from radio to streets to press to television buying. We’ve been doing this a long time, so we feel that we can look at a project, examine it and really put forth the best marketing plan for it.”

It’s a proven formula. “We have watched the majors fall apart, such as MCA, Priority, Loud and the Capitol/Virgin merger,” Shafton says. “At the same time, the independent companies that we manage are continuing to not only exist but thrive in this incredibly competitive marketplace. They are making money.”

PerformerMag.com features Broadtexter

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 10:00 am

We want to thank the good folks over at PerformerMag.com for featuring Broadtexter in a great article they published in their July issue both in print and on the web. You can view the web article HERE.

Basically, the article covers a variety of technologies that contribute to the DIY culture of artists taking control over more and more of the moving parts surrounding their careers. We couldn’t agree more with the points in the article…especially the part about how Broadtexter fills out a valuable part of the picture.

Thanks!

ATTN Bands: Support Underground Music, Support Yourself

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 10:00 am

Our friends over at armthepit.com have the following message…

The best thing musicians can do to keep yourselves and your art going (or excuses for getting free beer) despite the fact that the music industrial complex has effectively shut us all out is to unify and connect with each other. Communication between bands and clubs across the nation will make us all stronger and better equiped to keep on keepin’ on. Networking is the key my friends. Check out Arm The Pit. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up (free of course) and advertise yourself as well as make contacts with bands and clubs nation wide. The only thing that makes this work is YOU. Without you this all means nothing. The more bands here the easier it becomes to book tours cheaply without middle men. You also get the chance to be on a wonderful Arm The Pit compilation! Arm The Pit wants to help you help yourself.

If you have any questions or want to send your CDs, tapes, demos, 7inches and stuff to be reviewed, email them to armthepit@armthepit.com and we will set you up with all the info you need.

Check out these kick-ass bands when you drop by Sputterdoll, Secretions, Robbie & The Robots, Michaelane, Subpoena, and the other 400+ bands that are part of the family. Not in a band then sign up for a band’s street team and help them get seen and heard. See you in the pit.

Widgets have gone VIRAL!

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 3:00 pm

Broadtexter widgets can now be grabbed by fans and embedded on their pages. This is cool for an artist or band who has a street team or just some diehard fans who might take interest in promoting a particular mobile fan club on their own myspace, blog, or website. The process is real simple. Anyone can click on the ‘promote/embed’ link on the top-right area of the widget face and grab the code that pop-ups up. After embedding it on their web pages, the header and sub-header change to appropriately describe who they’re promoting.

We hope this helps bring more exposure to our user’s mobile fan clubs! There are many more features coming soon and thanks for all the feedback. If you have any suggestions or just want to share your thoughts, please drop us an email.

Stikkit Up Your…

Tag: Broadtexter NewsBroadtexter @ 1:00 pm

As most of you have probably heard, Broadtexter did not win the SXSW Web Awards. Everyone has been telling us that just being nominated was an honor in itself….but we know that’s bullshit. We totally have become the Susan Lucci of the mobile technology world.

We have demanded a recount of the votes, but so far no one at SXSW has gotten back to us.

This is why we are officially, “calling out” the guys from Stikkit (they were the ‘winners’). That’s right - we are ready to settle this thing once and for all and we’re gonna do it the old-fashion way. With a good old street fight. That’s right - No knives, no computers, just hand to hand, man to man, computer programmer to computer programmer contact.

So, to the guys from Stikkit, if you’re reading this, meet us behind the cafeteria at 2:45 next Thursday. Leave your pocket protectors at home.

Our internal editorial conversation about this write-up

Teddy: Is this appropriate?
Andy: No, this is completely inappropriate.
Dave: We can NOT post this.

Schedule Your Alerts

The Newest Feature on Broadtexter

We know that artists using Broadtexter are busy with everything else that goes along with touring and playing out, so we wanted to make life easier for them!

Now artists using Broadtexter can write their text alerts in advance, specify the region and schedule the date and time for delivery. “SET it and FORGET it”. This is also a great feature for the artists who have their managers and bookers handle their text alert reminders. Plus, we make it easy for our users to come back anytime and modify or cancel a scheduled alert before it goes out.

Of course, our users can still send the old fashioned way as well–in real-time from their account area on our website or RIGHT FROM THIER OWN CELL PHONE.

Click here for some important instructions about how to SEND ALERTS from the web, a cell phone, or now as a scheduled send.

If you’re an artist and you’re not yet using Broadtexter, then please give it a shot. We’re running a promotion that lets you use it free for 6-months, but that won’t be around forever. Click here to give us your feedback…we appreciate it.
